Watching Brief & Monitoring

We regularly undertake watching briefs, typically on smaller sites or where the likelihood of finding archaeological remains is considered low. This involves the monitoring of groundworks associated with the development. Findings are recorded as the work progresses, while enabling work to continue. Monitoring can also be carried out on standing buildings following clearance or removal of internal fixtures and can help further understand their historical development.

Evaluation & Excavation

We carry out evaluation and excavation for a range of sites. The excavation of evaluation trenches is carried out to assess the archaeological potential of an area, typically following an earlier phase of assessment. Where the presence of significant archaeological remains has been established this would lead to full archaeological excavation in order to examine these in detail.

Desk-Based & Heritage Assessment

Desk-based and heritage assessments are often the first stage of any project and can take many forms, depending on the size of project. We undertake such assessments for a wide range of sites and have an extensive library of relevant material.

Greenlane Archaeology and its staff hold a large collection of local and regional archaeology and local history sources, including some primary documents, and a number of journals. These can be accessed through our research services or copies of references can be supplied as required.
