Land Adjacent to Temple Cottage, Over Burrow, Lancashire: Archaeological Watching Brief

An archaeological watching brief was carried out on 22nd April 2014 as a condition of consent for the erection of a new garage and workshop within the Scheduled Monument area for Calacvm Roman fort and civilian settlement on land adjacent to Temple Cottage, Over Burrow, Lancashire. The watching brief monitored the removal of rubble and other debris from the area to the east of Temple Cottage and subsequent excavation of footings for the proposed new garage and workshop. It was quickly apparent, however, that the area had previously been reduced and levelled to a depth of almost half a metre into the underlying natural layers, which probably accounts for why no finds or features were observed despite the proximity of the site to the Roman fort.
