Land off Meadowlands Avenue, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria: Archaeological Evaluation

Prior to the submission of a planning application for the construction of 44 dwellings on land off Meadowlands Avenue, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, a geophysical survey of the site was carried out in May 2016. This showed features of possible archaeological interest which were subsequently targeted by archaeological evaluation trenches between the 18th and 22nd July 2016. The site is situated on the eastern edge of Barrow-in-Furness and probably saw relatively little development until the post-medieval period following the Dissolution of the monasteries and after the coming of the railway. Several of the trenches contained features of possible archaeological interest but none of these could be readily dated.
